One of the most challenging priorities for the plastics industry today is achieving greater sustainability through a more comprehensive approach to lifecycle management. This is particularly true for plastic packaging.

Plastic packaging makes an indisputable and valuable contribution to society. With a long history of delivering food and consumer products efficiently, in the last decade great strides have been made in designing and engineering plastics packaging to improve its environmental performance and decrease its environmental costs. Today, plastic packaging is stronger yet lighter, advancing the principles of sustainability through the hierarchy of reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. But the benefits of that contribution are realized only when plastics are included in recovery programs and consumers recycle them properly.

In Canada, the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) focuses on plastic packaging recovery as one of its core objectives. Taking a leadership role, it works in partnership with local governments and the recycling industry along the value chain to improve access to programs that include a broader range of plastics, to improve processing technology and methodologies, to motivate market development and to help consumers be better recyclers.

Increasing recovery rates starts with clear communication with consumers beginning at the curb, and to that end CPIA has invested in giving local governments access to free communication resources and advice to help them overcome barriers to achieving their recovery targets. Ultimately, CPIA's goal is to increase the types and volumes of plastics recovered for recycling, thus ensuring improved environmental performance and sustainability.

In this presentation, CPIA will provide an overview of plastics recycling in Canada and share how it has made its signature Image Bank, an online promotion and education resource, an important and valuable go-to tool in plastic recycling communication.
